Biography

Artist Statement -"As an artist, I am compelled to go beyond a purely visual connection between the artist and viewer, to a place where my work is a catalyst of discussion, challenge, or humor.  My aim is to trigger interaction between the viewer and painting and extrude an interpretation unique to that individual."

What lies behind the faces that we show to the world is a constant theme for Adelaide Hills artist Chris Wake. Her latest exhibition plays with this idea in a carnival setting, with jugglers, acrobats and magicians, even a nude opera diva, playing and cavorting through circus and outdoor scenes, with masks on or at hand. The effect is droll and somehow disturbing. Paintings are antipodean with characters that have Nolanesque eyes that follow the viewer, or look sideways in unease or alarm. Tilted heads turn away from each other creating a sense that in spite of the festive setting characters are caught in their own private and possibly nightmare universe.

Chris Wake was selected as a finalist in the 2008 Sovereign Asian Art Prize, the standard was very high with over 1100 professional artists nominated by respected art dealers,, only 30 finalists were selected. Held in Hong Kong the eminent judges came from all over the world including curators from the Tate Modern and and Guggenheim museums.  The European Sovereign Art Prize is held in London.  "Dali Is Not So Crazy" achieved the second highest auction price by Sothebys out of the 30 lots and missed out on the peoples choice by only a few votes.

Participating in the Singapore Art Fair 2006 (showcasing collectable contemporary artworks from all over Asia) , Wake`s work was very well received. Her work is in private and corporate collections around Australia and overseas. Chris Wake was born in Adelaide in 1960, and has been painting since 1976 with sell out exhibitions, art collectors are keeping Wake busy in the studio. Represented by fine art galleries in Australia, Hong Kong, New York & Singapore.
